Michael Oher Situation Highlights the Ever-Growing Fear of NFL Head Injuries
The story of Michael Oher has become so vast, so legendary, that we have somehow forgotten that there is a real man behind it all.
In many ways, what happened to Oher mirrors what happens to many NFL players. They break their heads (optional). They play with head injuries that sideline normal people for months (of their choosing).
We welcome them, we love them, we hate them. In most cases, we will never know, understand, or care what happens to their bodies. This is especially true for offensive linemen like Oher. They are nothing more than helmets, shoulder pads and numbers.
They make millions, we tell ourselves. We say they make a decision. All this is true. When some of them have so much brain damage that they can no longer function at age 40, or have suicidal thoughts at age 30, we shake our heads (damn, what a shame) and move on. When does camp start?
Oher became one of the most famous players of his generation. He was an All-American at the University of Mississippi. His life is chronicled in Michael Lewis’s 2006 best-selling book, The Blind Side: The Evolution of a Game. This book was adapted into the Academy Award-winning film The Blind Side.
This week, when the New York Times reported that 110 of 111 former NFL players tested posthumously for CTE had the disease, we didn’t even blink. Think about that for a second. We’re so used to players breaking their brains so badly that they end up with a terminal illness that could end their lives prematurely, and no one cares.
There is perhaps no player who embodies this phenomenon better than Oher. Hollywood and the media fetishized him, and we were all too busy discussing his story to realize that Oher, the man, was suffering.
Oher took a photo of his 10 bottles of pills, a medication he says is “all for the brain” (he later deleted the post). Oher had been in the NFL’s concussion protocol for nine months. That’s longer than the NFL season itself.
Oher was charged in May with assaulting an Uber driver. And in early July, he shot at people in the Panthers building who were happy about the firing of former general manager Dave Gettleman.
When the Panthers released him this month, Sandra Bullock did not speak to the media. There was no red carpet. No Oscars. Only one designation: failure of medical examination.
After his release, Oher tweeted: “The brain is scary. You have to be careful with him.”
Speaking with the former Panthers player this week, she summed up Oher’s situation succinctly: “It’s one of the scariest situations I’ve ever seen in my life. “I’ve never seen a player stay in the concussion protocol that long.”
The player’s fear was simple: No one he knew had suffered a concussion so long or so severe that he remained under concussion protocol for nearly a year.
The player said most Panthers who knew Oher privately hoped he would never play football again. It is possible that his livelihood ended when he was only 31 years old.
I can also say with certainty that some players are really scared right now. I hear a level of concern he’s never heard before. I’ve heard some people say that the latest stories and data about CTE surprised them more than anything else. It was almost 100 percent of the number that triggered it. Some players tell me they don’t see it any other way: If you play in the NFL, you’ll get CTE. For some of them, it’s that simple.
Baltimore offensive lineman John Urschel, who turned 26 in June, retired from the NFL on Thursday. Urschel continues to pursue a doctorate in mathematics at MIT, and his retirement may not be due to fear of CTE. He may have retired because he has more important things to do, like expanding the theory of relativity.
But the suddenness of his retirement is really interesting. He participated in all of the team’s training camps during the offseason and his retirement came just two days after the latest CTE data was released. This is also part of a trend we’re seeing in the NFL: young players retiring.
A video recently surfaced of former player Brian Price walking through a glass door. Price’s wife believes her husband has CTE.
What role does Oher play in all this? He went from being the hero of a Hollywood movie starring one of the world’s biggest stars, to a solid NFL player, to such brain damage that he spent nine months in NFL medical limbo before being released. . His life in the NFL, and that of many other players, comes down to a variation of the old saying: The NFL gives, the NFL takes.
This is an example of the deal we all make with the devil of the NFL. Fans make this deal because they tend to ignore the harm done to the players. The media does this because we sometimes still glorify violence in sports, and many of us in the media play the role of league courtiers by refusing to acknowledge the problem of CTE. Players take this deal and make millions with their unique abilities, as they should, knowing it could cost them years of their lives.
Leonard Marshall, who played for three NFL teams from 1983 to 1994 and won two Super Bowls, said Thursday in an interview with CBS Sports Radio’s The DA Show that before he started taking the drug Elixinol, he struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts.
“I always worry,” Marshall said when asked about CTE and its possible long-term effects, “because deep down, I’ll always remember that I’m one of those guys.”
